Voice Is the Brand's Personality. Tone Is Its Mood.
A person has one personality but expresses it differently in a board meeting vs. a casual lunch. Brand voice is consistent — it is who you are. Brand tone adapts — it is how you show up in a specific context. The distinction matters enormously for content teams working across different channels and formats.
Building a Brand Voice
- Define 3-4 core personality traits with specific behavioral examples ("we are direct, not rude")
- Create a brand vocabulary — words you use and words you avoid
- Document tone calibrations for different contexts: formal (investor relations), warm (customer support), urgent (crisis communications)
- Test all brand communications against a simple question: does this sound like our person would say this?
